In 2003 a group of experienced, performance art professionals noted a lack of resource designed for young Maori and Pacific people. More specifically they saw need for;
a) A wider, Pan-Pacific reach
b) A contemporary, urban perspective
c) An action research/evidence-based approach
After a bit of back and forth, a charitable trust was agreed upon. It was also agreed that it would use art and sport as the vehicles for engagement. Industry development was a focus to be tightly knitted to the equation and wanting to explore how practitioner work in the field could contribute to better and more relevant policy for youth.

Since then YPT has undergone several changes – 2006 marked another milestone whereby YPT took onboard the running of the Smokefree Pacifica Beats High School Band Competition.
