Our Story

In 2003 a group of experienced, performance art professionals noted a lack of resource designed for young Maori and Pacific people. More specifically they saw need for;

a)    A wider, Pan-Pacific reach
b)    A contemporary, urban perspective
c)    An action research/evidence-based approach

After a bit of back and forth, a charitable trust was agreed upon. It was also agreed that it would use art and sport as the vehicles for engagement. Industry development was a focus to be tightly knitted to the equation and wanting to explore how practitioner work in the field could contribute to better and more relevant policy for youth.

“To be a catalyst for innovative change where Maori and Pacific youth fulfill on their ‘real’ potential”

Since then YPT has undergone several changes – 2006 marked another milestone whereby YPT took onboard the running of the Smokefree Pacifica Beats High School Band Competition. We did that for ten years ending in 2015. In 2016 yet another milestone – a new strategic plan, a new board and new directions. Matariki Rhythmz was born.
