The inaugural Matariki Rhythmz high school music and dance event, run by YPT, is happening on Saturday 9th July at the Vodafone Events Centre (BNZ Theatre) at 7pm.

The finalists from around the Auckland region previously battled it out in a heats competition held two weeks ago.  Saturday will be the final for the competition where they will once again show what they’ve got and compete for cash prizes, recording opportunities and a chance to gain a scholarship – as well as the bragging rights of being the best in Matariki.

The opportunity to be professionally recorded at Roundhead Recording Studio in Auckland and to be mentor produced by an industry heavy-weight is a chance any young up-and-coming musician would relish and this opportunity will be given to both the winning band and best duo/solo artists in the competition.

The MAINZ (Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand) Scholarship will be awarded as the best musicianship award on the night and will give one lucky musician the opportunity to study at MAINZ with a full year’s tuition valued at $5,500.

The entrants will be judged by Kiwi popstar K’lee, bass guitarist Junior Nansen and actor director Tammy Davis.

K’lee is famous for her tracks during the early two-thousands and also for being one of Auckland’s hottest radio DJ’s (currently on Mai FM), while Junior is well-known for his work as Stan Walker’s bass guitarist, and Tammy is one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable faces through his acting work but also as the directer of the feature film ‘Born to Dance’.

The night will also feature a fabulous opening dance routine from the Freshmans Dance Crew and up-and-coming musician Tommy Nee will entertain the audience with his original stylings during judge deliberations.

DJ Poroufessor, one of Aotearoa’s best indigenous beatmasters will be rocking the show between acts while the Flava FM Street Team will be on hand giving live updates during the event.
